Hal joined the corps, but things got complicated and he became the vehicle for the incarnation of Fear itself. Hal Jordan became a Green Lantern when an alien crashed on Earth and gave him his ring of power (that is the simple way of telling the story). If you don’t know what the Green Lantern Corps is, it’s like the space cops of the universe. It’s full of great characters, well-thought storylines and a lot of ambitions. Johns created a new start and expanded it in a big way that still defined it to this day. It’s a great way to enter the Green Lantern world. I didn’t really know a lot about Green Lantern, but when I started digging into what is considered must-read, the Geoff Johns run on the famous DC Comics series was often named. I pushed it away, but I finally came back to it when I read that there’ll be a new reprint next year. ![]() When I started this blog, this reading order was one of the first on my to-do list. ![]() They had willingly given him the tools to turn Germany into a vicious dictatorship.īenjamin Carter Hett is a leading scholar of twentieth-century Germany and a gifted storyteller whose portraits of these feckless politicans show how fragile democracy can be when those in power do not respect it. Hett lays bare the misguided confidence of conservative politicians who believed that Hitler and his followers would willingly support them, not recognizing that their efforts to use the Nazis actually played into Hitler's hands. He would never have come to power if Germany's leading politicians had not responded to a spate of populist insurgencies by trying to co-opt him, a strategy that backed them into a corner from which the only way out was to bring the Nazis in. To say that Hitler was elected is too simple. ![]() Why did democracy fall apart so quickly and completely in Germany in the 1930s? How did a democratic government allow Adolf Hitler to seize power? In The Death of Democracy, Benjamin Carter Hett answers these questions, and the story he tells has disturbing resonances for our own time. A riveting account of how the Nazi Party came to power and how the failures of the Weimar Republic and the shortsightedness of German politicians allowed it to happen ![]() ![]() It was recommended to Kay to write this diary as a "reflective practice" in which he could log any interesting clinical experiences he experienced throughout his training. ![]() This is Going to Hurt is mostly composed of diary entries Adam Kay wrote during his medical training under the National Health Service. Kay's book discusses political issues in the health care system of the National Health Service in the United Kingdom and societal conflicts between the general population and neglected doctors. It is a collection of diary entries written by Kay during his medical training from 2004 to 2010. ![]() ![]() This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor is a nonfiction book by the British comedy writer Adam Kay, published in 2017 by Picador. ![]() ![]() You might even say that it's the voice of a generation. After all, it's a female writer’s portrayal of what it means to be a girl (much like herself) growing up to be a woman (much like herself) in a particular time in history an examination of what kind of woman that girl is supposed to be, and what she can be if she rebels against certain established precedents. Still, you could argue that Little Women is a more popular book than Little Men, and maybe it's a more important book, too. There's joy in that book, and there's fun. There's no terribly sad saw-it-coming-a-mile-away death of, and the relationships between the characters are interesting and poignant and at times sad and also lovely, but most of all entertaining. ![]() ![]() This may be controversial, but I'll say it: I think Little Men is a more enjoyable book than Little Women.
